In the late 1970s a group was formed to create a memorial to the American veterans of the Vietnam War. A site for the memorial was approved unanimously by the U.S. Senate on June 30, 1980. Shortly thereafter a competition to design the memorial, which had to include the names of all Americans killed in the war or were still missing.
