Vickers was a pioneer in producing airliners, early examples being converted from Vimy bombers. Post-WWII, Vickers went on to manufacture the piston-engined Vickers VC.1 Viking airliner, the Viscount and Vanguard turboprop airliners and (as part of BAC) the VC10 jet airliner, which was used in RAF service as an aerial refuelling tanker until 2013.
The aircraft operating the flight was a Vickers Viscount, Makers Serial Number (MSN) 394. It was built in 1958 for Misrair, the Egyptian airline, and sold to British Eagle International Airlines on September 3, 1965. [3] Upon purchase it was registered as G-ATFN and named “City of Truro".

At 1.46pm the Viscount's right wing hit the ground and the rest of the plane broke up bursting into flames. It crashed into a house 85 yards beyond the impact point at the junction of Shadowmoss Road and Ringway in Wythenshawe. All 20 passengers and crew on the aircraft died in the crash and two occupants of the house also died. [1] [2] [3]
