Ash is a young man who travels with various companions, aiming to fulfill his dream to become a Pokémon Master; his Pokémon lineup constantly changes over the course of the series, with its sole constant member being Pikachu, Ash's first Pokémon. Ash is loosely based on Red, the player character from the Generation I games Pokémon Red and Blue.
As Ash struggles to bond with Pikachu, who acts aloof and openly distrusts him, the two stumble upon a wild Pidgey, and Ash unsuccessfully tries to catch it by throwing a Poké Ball. Ash uses his Pokédex and learns that in order to catch a Pokémon via a Poké Ball, a trainer must first use their Pokémon to battle it, thereby weakening it.
Injured and tired, Ash tells Pikachu to get inside his Ball, but he once again refuses. Instead, Pikachu defends Ash from the Spearow by summoning a large Thunderbolt that scares them away. As the storm ceases, Ho-Oh flies above and drops a feather called a Rainbow Wing. Ash and Pikachu decide to go and find the Legendary Pokémon.
While heading to Stow-on-Side via train, Ash accidentally bumps into Allister, who loses his train ticket. Ash and Goh try to return Allister's ticket, but the latter flees and enters the ghost train. Ash and Goh also enter the ghost train, but Ash becomes possessed by a spirit after he touches a Spiritomb stone.
Ash arrives on Trovita Island prepared to battle for his third Orange League Gym Badge. However, much to Ash's dismay, the Gym Leader, Rudy, has more than just battling on his mind, Rudy develops a crush on Misty, much to Ash's jealousy once more. Rudy moves in to court Misty after she helps rescue his younger sister, Mahri.
Jessie falls in love with White and decides to quit Team Rocket to live with him. When a Pokémon hunter steals Meowth, Inkay and Pumpkaboo, Jessie realizes that White is in love with his childhood friend Beatrice. Ash and Serena distract the hunter to help James free Team Rocket's Pokémon, and Jessie and Wobbuffet reunite with them.

Both Ash and Volkner defeated Team Rocket with the help of Ash's newly evolved Torterra. Later, Volkner battled Ash in a Gym Battle only to be defeated. Volkner returned in Journeys as he is participating in the World Coronation series and reunites with Ash. While he does put a good fight, he lost to Ash again. Drayden (シャガ, Shaga)
