The 2022 GCC Games was the third edition of multi-sport event for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. It was held in Kuwait, from 16 to 31 May 2022. A total of more than 1,500 athletes and 500 officials participated in 16 sports. Female athletes competed for the first time at the GCC Games in this edition.
The 3rd edition of the game had to be organized in June 2019, but held in 2022 due to the internal issues between the GCC state countries. The 4th edition has been announced and will happen as per the announced dates. For the first time the games will be organized by the new, young and talented faces of GCC team.
In addition to the senior championship, the GCC also holds the Gulf Cooperation Council Youth Athletics Championships. [1] The GCC holds championships for various other sports, including golf, basketball and fencing. The 2011 championships was held as part of the 2011 GCC Games.
The idea for the tournament was established at the 1968 Summer Olympics, and the first Arabian Gulf Cup took place in 1970 which was won by Kuwait.Kuwait has been the most successful team in the tournament's history, winning 10 tournaments out of 26 in total, followed by Iraq with four titles, and Saudi Arabia and Qatar with three titles each.
