There are some indications that blackcurrant seed oil is anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective. [1] In European folk medicine, black currant once had a considerable reputation for controlling diarrhea, promoting urine output (as a diuretic) and reducing arthritic and rheumatic pains. [2] It is primarily used medicinally and as a diet supplement.
Berocca Performance is a formulation of B vitamins, vitamin C plus added magnesium, calcium and zinc. When first released in 1969, Berocca came in one flavour, Berry, which later became Original Berry. It now comes in four flavours: Original Berry, Orange, Blackcurrant, and Mango & Orange.
The blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum), also known as black currant or cassis, [a] is a deciduous shrub in the family Grossulariaceae grown for its edible berries. It is native to temperate parts of central and northern Europe and northern Asia, where it prefers damp fertile soils.

Ribes (/ ˈ r aɪ b iː z /) [5] is a genus of about 200 known species of flowering plants, most of them native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. [2] The species may be known as various kinds of currants, such as redcurrants, blackcurrants, and whitecurrants, or as gooseberries, and some are cultivated for their edible fruit or as ornamental plants.
Beyond adverse effects from the herb itself, "adulteration, inappropriate formulation, or lack of understanding of plant and drug interactions have led to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening or lethal." [3]
The nearly black berry, which is smaller than a gooseberry and a bit larger than a blackcurrant, is edible both raw and cooked. It is described as having a taste intermediate between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant, with the gooseberry flavor more dominant in the unripe fruit, and the blackcurrant notes developing as the fruit ripens.
The species is divided into two varieties, [4] each known simultaneously as northern black currants, and by their own individual common, and scientific names; the type variety, R. h. var. hudsonianum, is also known as the Hudson Bay currant; [4] [7] whereas R. h. var. petiolare is also known as the western black currant.
