The BMW B58 is a turbocharged straight-six engine, which began production in 2015. [1] The B58 replaced the N55 and was launched in the F30 340i. [2]The B58 is part of BMW's modular engine family, each engine using a displacement of 500 cc (30.5 cu in) per cylinder, following the B38 and B48 engine.
The BMW N52 is a naturally aspirated straight-6 petrol engine which was produced from 2004 to 2015. The N52 replaced the BMW M54 and debuted on the E90 3 Series and E63 6 Series . The N52 was the first water-cooled engine to use magnesium/aluminium composite construction in the engine block. [ 1 ]
BMW 2800 (E3) "New Six" sedan/saloon. After a long hiatus, BMW decided to develop a six-cylinder car in the early 1960s. Work on what was to become the E3 commenced in 1965. The engine was based on the existing M10 inline 4s, sharing their overall layout, though not merely adding two cylinders. [1]
It was first used in the F56 Mini Hatch and has been used in BMW applications since 2015. The B48 is part of a modular BMW engine family of 3-cylinder ( B38 / B37 ), 4-cylinder (B48/ B47 ) and 6-cylinder ( B58 / B57 ) engines, [ 1 ] which use a displacement of 500 cc (30.5 cu in) per cylinder.
The engines utilise a common displacement of 500 cc (31 cu in) per cylinder. [3] The B57 replaced the previous N57 diesel engine, and was first introduced in the G11 7 Series . The B57 is available in configurations of up to 4 turbochargers , that operate in a double-series layout. [ 4 ]
The S52 also shares more in common with the regular M52 engine than the S50 did with the M50, for example sharing the engine block (cast iron, as per North American M52 engines) and cylinder head. Unique to the S52 is a bore of 86.4 mm (3.4 in) and stroke of 89.6 mm (3.5 in) for a total displacement of 3,152 cc. Compression ratio is 10.5:1.
The BMW M54 is a naturally aspirated straight-6 DOHC petrol engine produced from 2000 to 2006. It was released in the E53 X5 [1] and is the replacement for the M52 engine. The S54 is the equivalent high performance engine, used in the E46 M3, the Z3 M Coupé/Roadster and the E85/E86 Z4 M.
