Goliath tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath) is one of five recognized African species of the Hydrocynus genus and is found in the Congo River Basin (including Lualaba River and Lake Upemba), and Lake Tanganyika. [3] [4] The type locality is the city of Mbandaka in the Main Congo, where it was discovered in 1898 by French explorer Boulenger. [5]

The largest characins are Hydrocynus goliath and Salminus franciscanus and Hoplias aimara, [14] both of which are up to 1.2 m (3.9 ft). The smallest in size is about 1.7 cm (0.67 in) in the Bolivian pygmy blue characin, Xenurobrycon polyancistrus. [15] Many members are under 3 cm (1.2 in). [1]

There is only one order and family in this animal class. All of the 77 known species have elongated, eel-like bodies but can be distinguished by their downward-facing mouths. The largest form is the Goliath hagfish (Eptatretus goliath). This species can range up to 1.28 m (4.2 ft) in length and weigh to 6.2 kg (14 lb). [19]
