Certainly 46-letter words are extremely unusual, but words longer than 12 letters are common. According to the Esperanto Wikipedia, the longest words that actually occur in the Tekstaro corpus are 23 letters long (ŝtatimpostadministradon and interlingvistikŝatantoj). I would very much like to see a source for the 46-letter word.
