Cassandra O'Neal (born Cassandra Louise O'Neal on January 17, 1973) is an American musician, composer, and recording artist. Best known as keyboard player (2009–2016) with Prince and The New Power Generation, she has an impressive resume of work with major industry (gospel, pop and funk) artists for over twenty-five (25) years.
Gaines is a former band member of Prince's group the New Power Generation. She duetted with singer Prince on the hit song "Diamonds and Pearls". She released a number of dance hits, the most notable being "Closer than Close", which made the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart in 1997.
The most popular version of the song was recorded by Nat King Cole, in 1951, from his album, Unforgettable (1952), with an arrangement written by Nelson Riddle.
