The lake, which was built in 1935, impounds the waters of Peal Creek. It is operated as Clayton Lake State Park by the State of Oklahoma. Sequoyah's Cabin is located east of Akins on the east side of State Highway 101 at a point where it makes a northward jog. In 1907 the City of Frederick was incorporated, Oklahoma became a state, Frederick was named the seat of Tillman County, and the Katy Railroad came to Frederick. [6] By 1915, Frederick had 15 miles of sidewalks and crossings, and 75 miles of wide, graded, rolled streets. The first paved streets were laid in 1918. [7] [8]
The western area of Wagoner County was settled by the Creek after their forced removal in Alabama in the 1820s. The eastern portion of the county was settled by the Cherokee. [1] During the Civil War in 1865, the present county was the scene of the Battle of Flat Rock (also known as the Hay Camp Action).
It has been furnished reflecting the period 1830s-1860s, including furnishings and artifacts from the Murrell family. The Daniel Cabin is a log cabin on the property; it is used for living history demonstrations of Cherokee life in the 1850s. In 2018 the name was officially changed from Murrell Home to Hunter's Home. [7]
