Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS) is the largest public school district in Indiana, [211] enrolling nearly 31,000 students in the 2013–2014 academic year. FWCS operate 51 facilities, including 31 elementary schools, ten middle schools, and five high schools. The student body is diverse, with 75 spoken languages in the district. [212]
The closing of Elmhurst has been a highly debated topic over the past several years, and the Board, by a unanimous vote of 7-0, agreed to accept the administration's recommendation. With that action, the 2009/10 school year was the final year of operations for the school. Returning students were reallocated to other high schools in the FWCS system.
The 1970–73 addition included several classrooms, a new media center and a new auditorium. A new physical education facility was completed in January 1981, and recently South Side has completed a 39.5 million dollar renovation which includes Fort Wayne's only Olympic-sized swimming pool. South Side is now an academic gem in the FWCS crown.
