The area is anchored by the principal cities of Champaign and Decatur and is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, the flagship campus of the University of Illinois system. (University students, even those from outside the area, are included in Census figures if they were counted by the federal Census).
Champaign is Township 19 North, Range 8 East of the Third Principal Meridian. According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 18.64 square miles (48.3 km 2), of which 18.57 square miles (48.1 km 2) (or 99.62%) is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 km 2) (or 0.38%) is water. [2]
