In 1875, the Government of Canada had granted a 57.9 kilometres (36.0 mi) strip of land along the western shore of Lake Winnipeg between Boundary Creek and White Mud River inclusive of Hecla Island to Icelandic immigrants who established a settlement in what is now Gimli in the fall of 1875.
Settlers had landed at the community of Icelandic River which is now known as Riverton, Manitoba, and they saw the agricultural potential of the inland meadows. [1] Unfortunately, New Iceland was hit with a series of setbacks, including a smallpox outbreak in 1880 which prevented the area's development at the time.
From the Icelandic Pioneer Memorial in Elfros comes the following quotation. "There were two waves of Icelandic settlement to and within Saskatchewan. The first group came directly from Iceland, paused briefly in Winnipeg, then moved on to Saskatchewan. The second group trekked north and west from older settlements in North Dakota and Manitoba.
