The site is located on Farm to Market Road 2852 off State Highway 35, two miles north of West Columbia. The site is near 66 acres (27 ha) in size. Varner Creek runs through the property. [2] An 1835-era farmhouse, refurbished by Miss Ima, is located on the site.
Old Ocean was originally known as Chance's Prairie, after the land grant made to Joseph H. Polley and Samuel Chance on July 27, 1824. William B. Sweeny, one of the founders of Chance's Prairie and for which the local town of Sweeny was named, bought 2,319 acres (9.38 km 2) from Polley and Chance for $1,950.
By the mid-1800s, the town had a population of 800. The arrival of the railroad in the area led to the decline of steamboat traffic, which had an adverse effect on the town's fortunes. Storms in 1900, 1909, and 1913 were destructive to the community. When oil was discovered in West Columbia in 1918, merchants abandoned East Columbia.
