The Diocese of Imus was created on November 25, 1961 separating Cavite from the main archdiocese. Thus, the diocese serves as suffragan to that of Manila with its own leadership. It comprises the civil province of Cavite and covers a land area of 1,287 km 2 (497 sq mi), with a population of 1,643,549 of which 76 per cent are Catholics.

The Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Saint Mary Magdalene, commonly known as Kawit Church, is the parish church of the municipality of Kawit, Cavite in the Philippines. It is under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Imus. The Roman Catholic church is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines, construction of the present church was started in 1737.

The church serves as the seat of the bishop of the Diocese of Imus , the diocese that has jurisdiction over the entire Civil Province of Cavite.
