It was the world's first underwater movie premiere. In 1982, Buccaneer Bay was opened with water slides, a lazy river, and a white sand beach for visitors to enjoy alongside the theater with the mermaid shows. [3] Guests to the park have included Elvis Presley, Don Knotts, Esther Williams, Arthur Godfrey, Kevin Smith, and Larry the Cable Guy.
Buccaneer Bay was a pirate themed children's play area. The area is divided into two sections. One section is an Aqua Play structure featuring water sides and activities while the other is a series of shallow pools. [14] The original Buccaneer Bay featured shallow pools, small climbing structures and water guns. It closed mid Autumn 2005.
A new slide complex, 65 feet (20 m) tall will also be built including 6 new slides. The water park will be completely renovated, and construction began in 2012. [1] In 2015, Oceans of Fun added swan boats to Buccaneer Bay and Splash Island. [2] In 2019, the park announced that Diamond Head would be closed at the end of the season.
Simson Provincial Park, established in 1986 and named after pioneer Calvert Simson, [1] occupies the majority of the southern part of South Thormanby Island. The northern half of the island is predominately private property, with a concentration of seasonal cottages along Buccaneer Bay and Water Bay. [2]
