VIA's original logo, used until 2014. VIA was created in 1977 when the citizens of Bexar County voted in favor of a one-half cent sales tax to fund the service. Subsequently, VIA purchased transit assets from the City of San Antonio and began operations in March 1978, taking its name from the Latin word for "road".

Most routes west of Port Jefferson and Patchogue are scheduled with 30 minute headways (60 minutes on routes 3, 10 and 15) during weekdays until at least 6:00 p.m. On all routes from Port Jefferson and Patchogue and to the east, including the north-south routes between those two terminals, there are 60-minute headways (except for 30-minute headways on routes 51 and 66).
This eliminated the DASH shuttle, Almaden Light Rail shuttle, limited-branded bus service, community bus service, and many express routes but established a core frequent network and increased service on numerous local bus routes. The TTA was involved in a joint venture with the Charleston, West Virginia-based Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority bus system called Intelligent Transit which linked downtown Huntington to Charleston via bus. The service ceased August 28, 2015 due to low ridership and lower gas prices compared to 2012.
