A Combat aviation brigade (CAB) is a multi-functional brigade-sized unit in the United States Army that fields military helicopters, offering a combination of attack/reconnaissance helicopters (Boeing AH-64 Apache), medium-lift helicopters (Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk), heavy-lift helicopters (Boeing CH-47 Chinook), and MEDEVAC capability.
The Aviation Brigade traces its heritage to 1 June 1959 with the activation of the 28th Aviation Company at the Capital City Airport, New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. The unit was reorganized as the 28th Aviation Battalion on 1 April 1963 and later relocated to 18th and Herr Streets (1976) and 21st and Herr Streets (1980) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The regiment was constituted on 1 February 1967 as the 214th Aviation Battalion, a Regular Army unit based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.It fought in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1972, receiving the Meritorious Unit Commendation for its actions in 1967 and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm five times, in addition to the Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal.

Upon its return in March 1973, the 12th Aviation Group became a major subordinate command of the XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
