The De Soto Motor Car Company was created in Auburn, Indiana, in November 1912, by L.M. Field, Hayes Fry and Glenn Fry of Iowa City, Iowa, and V.H. Van Sickle and H.J. Clark of Des Moines, Iowa. It was a subsidiary of the Zimmerman Manufacturing Company of Auburn, which had previously been at 440 North Indiana Avenue from 1908 until 1915.

In addition to cars, Lambert produced auto fire engines, trucks, gasoline engines and Steel-hoof farm tractors. The Buckeye Manufacturing Company produced the Lambert automobile through 1917, with the maximum production from 1907-1910, when the firm produced an average of 2,000 cars a year.
These cars were replaced with more modern, air-conditioned M-4 units from 1997 to 1999. Some cars were transferred to the Norristown High Speed Line in the early 1990s. The cars had to be re-trucked, because the Norristown line is standard gauge (4' 8½") while the Market-Frankford line is Pennsylvania trolley gauge (5' 2½"). [13]
