Overtourism is a substantial issue in Dubrovnik Old Town. The city is reported to be the most touristed in Europe [109] – more so than Venice and Barcelona - receiving 36 overnight tourists per resident per year. In 2019, the city welcomed almost 1.5 million overnight tourists against a population of just 41,000 people.
The original city was founded by the Greeks settlers from Corinth [5] in the 6th century BC under the name of Epidaurus (or Epidauros, Greek: Ἐπίδαυρος). [6] [7] The surrounding area was inhabited by the Illyrians, who called the city Zaptal. [8] The town changed its name to Epidaurum when it came under Roman rule in 228 BC.
Dubrovnik has its own international airport, located approximately 20 km (12 mi) southeast of Dubrovnik city centre, near Čilipi. Buses connect the airport with the Dubrovnik old main bus station in Gruž. In addition, a network of modern, local buses connects all Dubrovnik neighbourhoods running frequently from dawn to midnight.
Pasjača is located approximately 30 kilometres far from Dubrovnik, [2] one of the most prominent and most visited tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Cavtat, the seat of Konavle, is about 12 km away.
