New Iberia is located in southern Louisiana, in the Acadiana region. The city of New Iberia is a part of the Lafayette metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 square miles (27.4 km 2), all land. In 2000, the population density was 3,088.8 inhabitants per square mile (1,192.6/km 2).

At the 2020 census, it had a population of 69,929; [1] the parish seat is New Iberia. [2] The parish was formed in 1868 during the Reconstruction era and named for the Iberian Peninsula.
