The church has a west tower with diagonal buttresses and carved obelisk pinnacles, a two light belfry and a lead-clad spire. There is a heavy nave with aisle parapets. [ 2 ] The lychgate, officially opened on 26 June 1949 as a memorial to the dead of the two World Wars, was listed at Grade II in 1976.
John Smeaton FRS (8 June 1724 – 28 October 1792) was an English civil engineer responsible for the design of bridges, canals, harbours and lighthouses. [1] He was also a capable mechanical engineer and an eminent physicist. Smeaton was the first self-proclaimed "civil engineer", and is often regarded as the "father of civil engineering". [2]

The church, in 2019. St Eloy's Church is an Anglican church in Great Smeaton, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. There was a church in Great Smeaton at the time of the Domesday Book, and the font is from this period. The oldest part of the current building is the nave, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries.
