A football chant or terrace chant is a form of vocalisation performed by supporters of association football, typically during football matches. The Football Association (FA) asked Lightning Seeds songwriter Ian Broudie to compose a song for the 1996 UEFA European Football Championship. [5] He composed a melody he felt would make a good football chant, and asked the comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel, presenters of the football comedy show Fantasy Football League, to write the lyric.
The melody was also used by Manchester City and Sunderland fans for the chant "Niall Quinn's Disco Pants", in tribute to the Irish centre forward. The song was released as a single in April 1999, reaching no. 56 in the UK Singles Chart.
