"I'd Rather Go Blind" is a blues song written by Ellington Jordan [2] with co-writing credits to Billy Foster and Etta James. It was first recorded by Etta James in 1967, released the same year, [ 3 ] and has subsequently become regarded as a blues and soul classic.
The exact single recording by Chicken Shack of "I'd Rather Go Blind" was included on Perfect’s eponymous album, Christine Perfect, released on Blue Horizon. [10] After Perfect’s departure from the band in 1969, she was quickly replaced by Paul Raymond from Plastic Penny .
Perfect had previously been a member of the band Chicken Shack, having achieved a top 20 UK single singing a cover of the Etta James song "I'd Rather Go Blind".The same day that single was released, McVie left the band in 1968 to spend more time with John McVie, who she had recently married. [7]
In the late 1960s Jordan recorded as a one-man psychedelic funk act called Fugi, and released the song "Mary Don't Take Me on No Bad Trip" on Cadet Records (a subsidiary of Chess Records) in 1968. [1] A full album of the same title was recorded, but was not released until 2005. [6] It included Fugi's own version of "I'd Rather Go Blind". [5]
Never a Dull Moment was released on vinyl by Mercury Records on 21 July 1972.. On the 8-track tape and Cassette releases of the album the song "What Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)" was on program 2 following "Twistin' the Night Away", but it was not mentioned in the song listing.
