In 1922, the name of the lake was officially changed to Todd Lake, honoring John Y. Todd, an early pioneer in central Oregon who immigrated to the state in 1852. In 1860, he built the first bridge across the Deschutes River and later became a successful cattle rancher. Todd founded the Farewell Bend Ranch, which gave the city of Bend its name.
