Mount Airy / ˈ m aʊ n t ər i / [4] is a city in Surry County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 10,676. [5] As of 2020, the city is the most populous municipality in Surry County. Mount Airy is located within the Piedmont Triad metropolitan region.
Between Salisbury in Rowan County and Mount Airy in Surry County, US 52 is a limited access freeway and is in the process of being upgraded to Interstate Highway standards. Several Interstate highways either already, or are planned to in the near future, overlay the US 52 freeway. From Salisbury to Lexington, it is cosigned with I-85.

MD 144 eastbound past MD 27 in Mount Airy. MD 144 begins at an intersection with MD 27 (Ridge Road) just south of MD 27's interchange with I-70 south of Mount Airy. The state highway, known as Frederick Road, immediately turns north and after 0.07 miles (0.11 km) crosses the Frederick–Carroll County line. [1]
Mayberry Mall is a shopping mall located just outside Mount Airy, North Carolina on the east side of U.S. Highway 52. It was named after the fictitious town of Mayberry in which The Andy Griffith Show was based. There are three anchor stores, Belk, Hobby Lobby and Shoe Show. (Doing business as one of Shoe Shows brand names, Shoe Dept.)
On May 31, 1962, NC 89 was placed onto split streets in Mount Airy. Whereas the road had previously used South Main Street for both traffic directions, the northbound lanes were placed onto Cherry Street, Renfro Street, and Pine Street. The southbound lanes of NC 89 continued to use South Main Street. [8]
The western terminus is at NC 89 and U.S. Route 52 Business in downtown Mount Airy. This is next door to the Mount Airy Visitor Center. After traveling for about one-quarter mile (0.40 km) along East Pine Street, the highway intersects NC 104 at the latter's southern terminus.
