Reynolds Hall was the first educational building on campus, and it was also constructed using slave labor. When the University of Montevallo opened on October 12, 1896, Reynolds was the only class building and contained the chapel and president's office as well as classrooms. The Aldrich Coal Mine Museum is a historical museum located in the former company store of Montevallo, Alabama. Aldrich was once a coal mining town, but is now a part of Montevallo. The museum contains historical photographs, artifacts, and displays from Aldrich's coal mine, churches, school, prison, stores, and post office.
After becoming a successful planter and businessman, he donated land for churches, roads, and schools, including for the Alabama Girls Industrial School (today known as the University of Montevallo). Upon his death in 1863, the house passed to a son-in-law, and was deeded to the Industrial School in 1908. [ 2 ]
