Jewel was born May 23, 1974, in Payson, Utah, the second child of Atz Kilcher and Nedra Kilcher (née Carroll). [5] [6] At the time of her birth, her parents had been living in Utah with her elder brother, Shane; her father was attending Brigham Young University. He moved from Switzerland to Alaska in 1936 where he then lived permanently, after returning to Switzerland for a short time in 1939, outside of Homer, Alaska .
