The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), or the Malaysian Certificate of Education, is a national examination sat for by all Form 5 secondary school students in Malaysia.It is the equivalent of the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) of England, Wales and Northern Ireland; the Nationals 4/5 of Scotland; and the GCE Ordinary Level (O Level) of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud (transl. Sultan Mahmud Science School; abbreviated SESMA) is one of the boarding schools in Malaysia. The school is located at Wakaf Tembesu, Kuala Nerus , Terengganu between Sekolah Menengah Teknik Lapangan Terbang and Kolej Vokasional Wakaf Tembesu .
The school was inaugurated on 17 November 2011. It became fully operational on 22 January 2012. Tuan Haji Muhamad Kamaludin bin Taib is the first and current principal of Sekolah Menengah Sains Banting. At that time, the school had only two batches. By 31 January 2012, the school had received approximately 200 new Form 4 (2012) students.
The students in the school consist of Malay, Chinese, Indians and Sarawak Bumiputras such as Ibans, Kayan, Kenyah and others. There is a total of 460 registered students as of November 2020. This school only take students for Form 1 until Form 5 (13 to 17 years old). Each form or batch has four (4) classes, named Iltizam, Usaha, Maju and Jaya.
The school's performance in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (2013) was the best in Perlis and ranked fourteenth among the Sekolah Berasrama Penuh with 76.92% students gaining straight A's and GPS rating of 1.0526 [4] [5] while Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia was the best in Perlis with 30 students obtaining straight A's.
