In the Tri-Cities area, the tornado killed four people (three in Wal-Mart and one in Prince George), injured 246, and caused an estimated $50 million in property damage. On April 28, 2008, an EF1 tornado (max. wind speeds 86-110 mph) produced a near two miles (3.2 km) long, though discontinuous, path through Colonial Heights.
The tornado then crossed into Colonial Heights, severely damaging a strip mall, a K-mart, and a waterbed store. A Wal-Mart was destroyed, with three fatalities occurring at that location. Many cars in the parking lot were tossed and destroyed as well. Damage in Colonial Heights was rated as low-end F3.
The mall is accessible from I-95 (Temple Avenue Exit 54 and Southpark Boulevard Exit 53) exits. The mall serves the Tri-Cities, Virginia area of the Greater Richmond Region . Southpark Mall stands at approximately 800,000 square feet (74,000 m 2 ).
