The northern beach, between Beach Road and the Wisconsin state border, was obtained between 1971 and 1982. [10] The south beach is now home of the Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center.
Decades of prairie restoration work, begun by Northeastern Illinois University's Robert Betz, have cleared away some of the brush and allowed much of the original prairie's tallgrass flora to re-establish itself.
