The summit of Hawksbill Mountain can be reached by a short hike from a trailhead located at the Upper Hawksbill parking area, just off of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. A number of other hiking trails lead to the summit of Hawksbill, while the Appalachian Trail goes around and about 500 ft (150 m) in elevation below the summit. [3]

There is only one official trail in the Upper Buffalo Wilderness, leading visitors to Hawksbill Crag. Visitors should expect difficult hiking conditions although water is extremely pure. Black bears are known to inhabit the wilderness, along with White-tailed deer , wild turkey , skunks , opossums , minks and pheasants .
The forest service also maintains several ATV trails. In 1971, the Massanutten Mountain ski lodge and four-season resort village was established near the southern peak. The private resort has nearly doubled in size since Great Eastern Resorts bought it in 1995.
