Gulf County, created in 1925, was named for the Gulf of Mexico. Wewahitchka was its first county seat and the 1927 Gulf County Courthouse is still in existence. In 1965 the county seat was moved to Port Saint Joe, which under its original name Saint Joseph, had been the site of Florida's first Constitutional Convention in 1838.

The St. Joseph Bay lighthouse was approved, and was erected on St. Joseph Point, at the end the St. Joseph Peninsula, entering service in early 1839. The lighthouse was a 55-foot (17 m) white conical brick tower, with 15 lamps with 16-inch (410 mm) reflectors at a height of 50 feet (15 m).
An 8 miles (13 km) long rail line from St. Joseph to Lake Wimico was completed in March, 1836, and the town became a shipping port. [ 3 ] By 1837 St. Joseph had become the most populous place in Florida, with a reported population between 4,000 [ 4 ] and 12,000 [ 5 ] inhabitants.
A new lighthouse, the St. Joseph Light Range Station, was constructed in 1902 on the mainland across from St. Joseph Point, at Beacon Hill. [4] A new town, Port St. Joe, was founded a couple of miles north of the site of the old town of St. Joseph around 1910, when the Apalachicola Northern Railroad built a branch line to the Bay. [5]
The first Cape San Blas Light was completed in 1849 with an appropriation of $8,000 made 2 years earlier. The shoals running out from the cape extended 3.5 or 4.3 nautical miles; 6.4 or 8.0 kilometres (4 or 5 mi) and made it dangerous for all vessels nearing the coast.
The St. Joseph Catholic Mission Church (also known as the Port St. Joe Garden Club) is a historic site in Port St. Joe, Florida, located at 216 8th Street. On July 31, 1998, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places .
