There are three main types of indentation: first-line, hanging and block. Each example below is in a box that represents the page boundary and uses the common typesetting lorem ipsum content. The width of indentation here is in units of em spaces. For first-line indentation the first line of a paragraph is indented. A first-line indentation of ...
Note that there is no blank line between comments, and if you reply using multiple paragraphs, use the colons before the blank line between paragraphs (see MOS:LISTGAP for explanation). 3. Your response to a reply should be positioned below that reply, but above any later responses that were made to a different comment. In the following, Alice ...
If the gap is between a colon list and an asterisk list, there is no issue, as the HTML is identical with or without the blank line. Likewise, a single-line gap between an unindented line and an indented line makes no difference. Leaving multiple lines, however, will cause the creation of an empty paragraph.
If a paragraph is preceded by a title or subhead, the indent is superfluous and can therefore be omitted. [2] The Elements of Typographic Style states that "at least one en [space]" should be used to indent paragraphs after the first, [2] noting that that is the "practical minimum". [3] An em space is the most commonly used paragraph indent. [3]
The term "right alignment" is frequently used when the right side of text is aligned along a visible or invisible vertical line which may or may not coincide with the right margin. For example, if a paragraph that is flush right were indented from the right, it would no longer be flush right, but it would still be right aligned.
Line breaks or newlines are used to add whitespace between lines, such as separating paragraphs. A line break that is visible in the content is inserted by pressing ↵ Enter twice. Pressing ↵ Enter once will place a line break in the markup, but it will not show in the rendered content, except when using list markup.
However, single line breaks in the source do have certain effects: Within a list, a single line break starts either the next item or a new paragraph; within an indentation (which, if marked up with leading colons, is really the definition part of a definition list), a single line break aborts the indentation and starts a new paragraph.
Indenting text this is used when replying on a talk page , to make it easier to follow conversations. After a string of indents, or to revive a discussion, an outdent {{Outdent|n}} ( Template:Outdent ) can be used to reset the paragraph to the left margin.
