The Bangkok–Nong Khai high-speed railway or Northeastern high-speed rail line is a high-speed railway under construction in Thailand. It will be the first high-speed line in Thailand. It will be constructed in multiple phases; the first phase, between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima, is expected to open in 2026 after multiple delays. [2]
Train services are operated by the State Railway of Thailand drivers until Nong Khai, before the train is operated by Lao National Railway drivers to the station. The service utilizes former JR-West rolling stock for sleeper and second-class trains, being the only regularly scheduled train to use this stock in Thailand.
The Vientiane Logistics Park opened in December 2021. [10] From 2009 to 2024, a shuttle train ran twice a day between Nong Khai railway station and Thanaleng station, [11] [12] with occasional services by the Eastern and Oriental Express.
The estimated cost of the Nong Khai–Thanaleng line was US$6.2 million, of which 70% was financed by Thai loans. [5] Construction formally began on 19 January 2007, [7] and test trains began running on 4 July 2008. [6] Formal inauguration occurred on 5 March 2009. [8]
