St Leonards-on-Sea (commonly known as St Leonards) is a town and seaside resort in the borough of Hastings in East Sussex, England. It has been part of the borough since the late 19th century and lies to the west of central Hastings.

St Leonards is an inner suburb of Hastings, New Zealand, in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand. It is named for St Leonards-on-Sea , a neighbouring town to Hastings' own English namesake . The suburb is located immediately north and northwest of the city centre, with the city's main road, Heretaunga Street , passing through its centre.
St Leonards Pier, also known as the Palace Pier, was a public pleasure pier in St Leonards-on-Sea, part of the town and borough of Hastings in East Sussex, England.Opened in 1891 [1] the pier was a direct rival to nearby Hastings Pier, [2] and during its heyday the pier was a leading tourist attraction, [3] and was described in the 1894 Baedeker travel guide as handsome. [4]
After founding his new town of St Leonards-on-Sea, James Burton gained permission by an Act of Parliament of 1837 to build a turnpike road northwards from Maze Hill to avoid the congestion in Hastings. [5] However, when this was authorized, the Hastings Council also obtained the necessary Turnpike Act to build a new road towards London.
