A Halfords in Kirkstall, Leeds (2006). Halfords was founded by Frederick Rushbrooke, in Birmingham in 1892, as a wholesale ironmongery. [3] The company takes its name from Halford Street, named after the physician, Henry Halford, in Leicester, where Rushbrooke opened a store in 1902 and started selling cycling goods.
The company has since ceased trading under the name Cycle Republic and merged with another Halfords owned subdivision called Tredz because of greater profit margins. Extended warranties given by Cycle Republic are being upheld by Halfords. In addition to bicycles, Cycle Republic sold e-bikes, cycling clothing, bike components and bike accessories.

Claud Butler (14 July 1903 – 2 November 1978) was a London-based bicycle dealer and frame-builder, who from 1928 created a chain of bicycle-retail shops in London and the Midlands. [1] [2] His company was one of the most successful of the inter-war era but failed after World War II and the resultant boom in motor buses and motor cars.
