In the United States, the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Center was founded in 1958 and was the first in the country to provide a 24-hour suicide prevention crisis line and use community volunteers in providing hotline service. In the United States, it is known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the number 1-800-273-8255). In Canada, it is known as the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline.
