  2. Speed of sound - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound

    For example, for a typical steel alloy, K = 170 GPa, G = 80 GPa and p = 7700 kg/m 3, yielding a compressional speed c solid,p of 6,000 m/s. [11] This is in reasonable agreement with c solid,p measured experimentally at 5,930 m/s for a (possibly different) type of steel. [21] The shear speed c solid,s is estimated at 3,200 m/s using the same ...

  3. Decibel - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel

The decibel originates from methods used to quantify signal loss in telegraph and telephone circuits. Until the mid-1920s, the unit for loss was miles of standard cable (MSC). 1 MSC corresponded to the loss of power over one mile (approximately 1.6 km) of standard telephone cable at a frequency of 5000 radians per second (795.8 Hz), and matched closely the smallest attenuation detectable to a ...

  4. Mach number - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mach_number

(m/s) Subsonic <0.8 <530 <609 <980 <273 Most often propeller-driven and commercial turbofan aircraft with high aspect-ratio (slender) wings, and rounded features like the nose and leading edges. The subsonic speed range is that range of speeds within which, all of the airflow over an aircraft is less than Mach 1.

  6. Kundt's tube - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kundt's_tube

The tube is a transparent horizontal pipe which contains a small amount of a fine powder such as cork dust, talc or lycopodium. [3] At one end of the tube is a source of sound at a single frequency (a pure tone).

  7. Talk:Speed of sound - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Speed_of_sound

The opening paragraph says "...343 m/s. This also equates to 1235 km/h, 767 mph, 1129 ft/s" By my calculation, 343 m/s = 1125.328048 ft/s which is easily enough rounded down to 1125 ft/s. The mistake is probably the result of someone changing the reference to 343 m/s from a previous notation of 344 m/s. I will correct the f/s calculation.

  9. Gauss (unit) - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauss_(unit)

Carl Friedrich Gauß in 1828, aged 50 years old. The gauss (symbol: G, sometimes Gs) is a unit of measurement of magnetic induction, also known as magnetic flux density. The unit is part of the Gaussian system of units, which inherited it from the older centimetre–gram–second electromagnetic units (CGS-EMU) system.
