Hewlett-Packard (HP) developed the first ScanJet in the mid-1980s at their printer division in Boise, Idaho. [4] [5] The ScanJet was released in March 1987, [6] as a compliment to their LaserJet series, which was the first commercially successful line of laser printers ever released, [7] introduced in 1984 and also developed at Boise.
Toner cartridges cannot be refilled indefinitely, because mechanical parts such as rollers wear out. Some cartridges include the electro-optical drum, which becomes depleted and can be scratched. Organizations refilling cartridges for resale usually clean and test each cartridge to ensure that it is fit for reuse and resale.
The program garnered rave reviews, and was followed by a color version 2.0 with Mac and Windows versions. Version 2.0 was widely bundled with scanners from a number of companies, notably Canon. Development and sales were discontinued on 1 August 1996. The assets of Light Source were purchased by Xrite, and the trademark on Ofoto later expired.
