Main part of this is converting fonts to base64 and preparing your CSS file. My steps so far: Pick fonts on Google Web Fonts and download them. Use Font Squirrel Webfont Generator to convert downloaded TTF files to CSS file with base64 embedded WOFF fonts (Expert options -> CSS -> Base64 Encode). Load CSS file async (not important here).
Thanks @StephenThomas I re-downloaded the file and the conversion worked. I copied and pasted the given font-face in stylesheet.css and I changed my font family, but the font still does not render in Chrome. Am I doing something wrong? Edit: I ran the test font.html file and the font properly renders in Chrome. I will mess around with my CSS ...

Set the font-weight and font-style properties accordingly in your @font-face calls (instead of FontSquirrel's default output where all of them are set to normal and they have separate names for each weight/style instead), and name them all the same font. By default, Font-Squirrel does this in order to increase support with user-agents that do not follow specification (those that ignore font-weight and font-style ). If you do not care about those outdated user-agents, you may enable the "Style Linking" option which is available in the expert section of the @font-face kit generator.
