Tachycardia, also called tachyarrhythmia, is a heart rate that exceeds the normal resting rate. [1] In general, a resting heart rate over 100 beats per minute is accepted as tachycardia in adults. [1] Heart rates above the resting rate may be normal (such as with exercise) or abnormal (such as with electrical problems within the heart).
Sinus tachycardia is a sinus rhythm of the heart, with an increased rate of electrical discharge from the sinoatrial node, resulting in a tachycardia, a heart rate that is higher than the upper limit of normal (90-100 beats per minute for adult humans). [1] The normal resting heart rate is 60–90 bpm in an average adult. [2]
A resting heart rate that is too fast – above 100 beats per minute in adults – is called tachycardia, and a resting heart rate that is too slow – below 60 beats per minute – is called bradycardia. [2] Some types of arrhythmias have no symptoms. [1] Symptoms, when present, may include palpitations or feeling a pause between heartbeats. [1]
Conditions including obstructive sleep apnea and chemical imbalances in the blood can cause bradycardia. Older adults are more prone to this form of arrhythmia, but it’s also not abnormal for ...
The American Heart Association states the normal resting adult human heart rate is 60–100 bpm. An ultra-trained athlete would have a resting heart rate of 37–38 bpm. [3] Tachycardia is a high heart rate, defined as above 100 bpm at rest. [4] Bradycardia is a low heart rate, defined as below 60 bpm at rest. When a human sleeps, a heartbeat ...
Tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy (TIC) is a disease where prolonged tachycardia (a fast heart rate) or arrhythmia (an irregular heart rhythm) causes an impairment of the myocardium (heart muscle), which can result in heart failure.
Excluding any potential secondary causes of sinus tachycardia; Ruling out atrial tachycardias; Palpitations or presyncope (or both) symptoms that have been clearly linked to resting or easily induced sinus tachycardia. Secondary causes of sinus tachycardia must be ruled out and corrected if present.
Blood tests may be done to rule out specific underlying causes such as hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytomas, or electrolyte abnormalities. [4] A normal resting heart rate is 60 to 100 beats per minute. A resting heart rate of more than 100 beats per minute is defined as a tachycardia.
