St George’s Church was a Commissioners' church designed by architect Francis Goodwin. Its grant of just over £17,000 (equivalent to £1,889,600 in 2023), [3] was the third-largest given by the commission to any church outside London. [4] It opened in 1824.
Primary and secondary schools in the district of the Wyre Forest in Worcestershire were part of the national school upgrading process from Building Schools for the Future. St John the Baptist's Church (Church of England), built in 1843. Kidderminster's parish church of St Mary and All Saints' is a grade I listed building dating mostly from the 15th and 16th centuries. [26] Another notable church is St John's Church, which is grade II listed, and dates from 1843. [27]
The original school built by Sir George Fettiplace in 1732 was defunct around 1830. A successor, King Alfred's School, Wantage, was founded in 1849, opening in 1850. In 1913 it became a parish room, when the present primary school was opened. [19] [20]
The original St George's School opened in Ramsgate in 1841. [2] In September 1967, St George's Girls C of E School moved from Ramsgate to a new building in Broadstairs near Dane Court Grammar School, with St George's Boys School moving to the site in 1973, after the construction of more facilities. In 2010, Ofsted stated that "St. George’s has undergone a remarkable transformation and has now confidently emerged from a turbulent period". [2] The school received publicity in 1995 when headmaster Philip Lawrence was fatally stabbed whilst intervening in a fight outside the school gates in order to protect a pupil.
