The club was founded in 1993 by The Walt Disney Company as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, a name based on the 1992 film The Mighty Ducks. Disney sold the franchise in 2005 to Henry Samueli, who, along with General Manager Brian Burke, changed the name of the team to the Anaheim Ducks prior to the 2006–07 season.

In the first round, they upset the Presidents' Trophy winning San Jose Sharks in six games.
After a franchise-record 6–1–1 pre-season, the Ducks opened the regular season in San Jose, taking on the Sharks in a 4–1 loss for the Ducks. Days later, the Ducks held their home opener on October 12, 2008, as they hosted a young and refreshed Phoenix Coyotes team. The Ducks dropped the game 4–2 in front of a sold-out home crowd.
