"Any Time at All" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles. Credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership, it was mainly composed by John Lennon, with an instrumental middle eight by Paul McCartney. [2] It first appeared on the Beatles' A Hard Day's Night album.
Lennon wrote the song about his love for Yoko Ono. [3] It begins in 6 8 time, with an arpeggio guitar theme in D minor, progressing through E 7(♭ 9) and B ♭ 7 before cadencing on an A augmented chord. In this chord sequence, the F note is a drone. The bass and lead guitar ascend and descend with a riff derived from the D minor scale.
The Beatles regularly played the song live throughout 1964 and 1965. During his 2016 One on One tour, Paul McCartney played the song for the first time as a solo artist and for the first time by a Beatle in half a century. The Beatles played it for the last time on 31 August 1965 at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California. [42]
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as the "White Album"). It was written by George Harrison, the band's lead guitarist, as an exercise in randomness inspired by the Chinese I Ching. The song conveys his dismay at the world's unrealised potential for ...
On a standard-tuned guitar (EADGBE) the song is played in the key of D; however, the recording was slowed electronically, resulting in a lower C ♯ tuning to the ear. The verse beginning "Words are flowing out" (I (D) chord) is notable for a prolonged vi (Bm)–iii (F ♯ m) to ii 7 (Em 7) minor drop to the dominant chord V 7 (A 7) on "across the universe" in the 4th bar. [7]
The album includes the song "A Hard Day's Night", with its distinctive opening chord, [4] and "Can't Buy Me Love", both transatlantic number-one singles for the band. Several songs feature George Harrison playing a Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar, a sound that influenced the Byrds and other groups in the emerging folk rock and jangle pop ...
Harrison likened "If I Needed Someone" to "a million other songs" that are based on a guitarist's finger movements around the D major chord. [22] [nb 3] The song is founded on a riff played on a Rickenbacker 360/12, [24] [25] which was the twelve-string electric guitar that McGuinn had adopted as the Byrds' signature instrument after seeing Harrison playing one in A Hard Day's Night.
The song was initially composed in C, but was played in F on Rubber Soul (with a capo on the fifth fret). The verse opens with an F major chord ("Michelle" – melody note C) then the second chord (on "ma belle" – melody note D ♭) is a B ♭ 7 ♯ 9 (on the original demo in C, the second chord is a F 7 ♯ 9).
