    www.trapshooters.com/threads/where-to-buy-bismuth-shot-in-bulk.197663

To hunt Rail birds in NJ you need non-toxic shot - I bough the last boxes of 28 gauge bismuth shells I could find a few years ago - I think they might be worth more than gold at this point (trust me, you don't want to know what I paid for them). Good luck. EDIT. I just looked at the sites hitapair mentioned and both show Bismuth in stock ...

And, Roster also includes instructions for loading buckshot in lieu of shot. Reply Like.

When Bismuth became available I started hand loading with it because of compatibility with older gun barrels AND it was closer in density to lead than that of steel.

I will load at 1400 to 1450 FPS. From the research I have done, Bismuth #5 @ 1350 FPS only has a killing range of 42 yards. 1-1/4 ounce of #5 Bismuth has 237 pellets but too short of a killing range. You will need at least #4 shot. Killing range is defined as 1.5" of penetration in ballistic gel.

  8. Bismuth vs Nice Shot, or ITX for duck hunting.

Years ago, through the grapevine, I heard that Bismuth wasn't a good goose load, because of the inherent brittleness made some of the shot shatter or powder a bit, making the load less efficient, and that with a larger bird, less efficiency might lead to an uptick in cripples. I'm hoping (if true) that problem has been overcome.

Hodgdon’s website has 1oz lead data using 572 and a Remington sp20 wad. In Tom Roster’s lead and bismuth manual he substitutes a precision 7/8oz steel wad for the sp20 and notes it at the same pressure and velocity. I’m attempting to load 1oz bismuth #5 using the precision wad in place of the sp20.

The other two Boss 3-inch Bismuth loads (1 3/8-ounce No. 5 Bismuth load and 1 ½-ounce No. 3/No.5 Bismuth duplex load) fell just short of typical Modified choke performance by registering 54% patterns. The two Kent loads tested (2 ¾-inch 1 ¼-ounce Upland No. 5 and Waterfowl No. 4 Bismuth loads) had consistent powder and pellet counts but both ...
