In 1971, a revolution and armed conflict emerged in East Pakistan, sparked by the rise of Bengali nationalism and a subsequent self-determination movement. After the Pakistani military junta, based in West Pakistan, launched a military assault to suppress the nationalist movement, an underground resistance movement, the Mukti Bahini, started a guerrilla war against the Pakistan Armed Forces.

Dwarkanath Gangopadhyay (also known as Dwarkanath Ganguly, 20 April 1844–27 June 1898) was a Bengali Brahmo reformer. He made substantial contributions towards societal enlightenment and the emancipation of women. Ganguly dedicated his life to the latter cause, encouraging women to participate in politics and the social services.
Twenty five women participated in this show and most of them were Bengali women. In 1939 women were provided the opportunity to enroll as students in the Calcutta Government Art School and they took it with pleasure. Aparna Ray was a student of the first batch of women and went on to become a teacher at the same school.
