Candles for the tree were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. Around 1890, candleholders were first used for Christmas candles.
Often, the tree branches were tipped with artificial red berries which acted as candle holders. [4] The branches were widely spaced to keep the candles from starting a fire, which allowed ample space for ornamentation.
