Warren Park is a town in Warren Township, Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,490 at the 2020 census. [3] It has existed as an "included town" since 1970, when it was incorporated into Indianapolis as part of Unigov. It is part of Indianapolis, but retains a functioning town government under IC 36-3-1-11. [6]
In 1970, the governments of Indianapolis and Marion County consolidated, expanding the city from 82 square miles (210 km 2) [3] to more than 360 square miles (930 km 2) overnight. As a result, Indianapolis has a unique urban-to-rural transect, ranging from dense urban neighborhoods, to suburban tract housing subdivisions, to rural villages. [4]
Old Northside was also the original location of Indianapolis' Butler University, then named North Western Christian University, which was later relocated to the town of Irvington. [3] [4] The neighborhood began a slow decline in the early 1910s as architectural tastes changed and families built homes further north in Indianapolis.
In recent years, the city of Indianapolis has finished constructing the Pleasant Run Trail greenway. The trail currently runs 6.9 miles (11.1 km) and connects Ellenberger Park with Garfield Park, the oldest park in the city, on the near south side of Indianapolis; significant northern and southern expansions are planned for the trail.
The entire township is administratively part of Indianapolis, although a portion of the included town of Clermont lies in the southwest corner. As of the 2020 census, Pike Township had a population of 83,030 living in an area of approximately 107 km² (41.5 mi²). [4] Pike Township was named for Zebulon Pike. [5]
