Ulysses, the OP has posted that he has a 20 gauge 870, so the 12 gauge doesn't apply here. I also have a 20 gauge 870 and from my measuring of a few slugs from Remington, Winchester, and Brenneke I'm 99% sure the bore size of these guns are .615. The Remington and Winchester slugs both measure .610 and are undersized, but not by much, for the bore,
I ordered three different types of slugs and some Cheddite hulls with "Hot" primers from Ballistic Products Inc. (BPI) for my 20 Gauge H&R Ultra Slug gun. I was able to get one type of slug (DGS Gualbo Steel Slugs) to shot extremely accurate groups at 100 yards (.898" 3-shot group) but it would only produced 2.60" 3 shot groups at 50 yards.
The only thing you want to avoid using for a poly choke or screw in choke is sabot slugs, only use rifled slugs. Another thing I have heard is that screw in chokes are not good for slugs. I have a Model 20 JC Higgins 12 ga. and it had a fixed full choke barrel on it, and I knew I couldn't use it for slugs.
I have used a smooth bore 20 gauge with Winchester rifled slugs, worked fine at 50 yards and in. Any well placed slug, 20 or 12 gauge, is going to be devastating on a hog sized animal. I'd buy the cheap slugs, and if you can hit a pie plate at 50 yards you're good to go.
from Midway USA- package of 25 Guaglandi Hunting Shotgun Slug 20 gauge 7/8's oz called DGS-20 slug- dangerous game slug- $15.77- it has the wad/powder cup attached- contacted BPI for the recomended load- 25.0 grains Longshot- 1541 velocity- I get 1551 out of my Beretta AL2 with cylinder tube- I shot at 60 yards off a bench into an old tree ...
You can get the Lyman 350 grain 20 gauge sabot shotgun mould to make your slugs, or you can get a Lee or Lyman 58 caliber mold (.575-.576 diameter) to make your projectiles. You can also look at the Collet Cup Sabot website for their sabots and gas seals. Their prices are fairly high but use .451 jacketed bullets for 20 gauge loads.
For informal range work, learning to shoot slugs, h.d. etc. it's hard to beat the Walmart price on Winchester and Remington rifled slugs at roughly $7.54 a fifteen pack in 12 and/or 20 gauge. You should easily hold groups of well under six inches at 50 yards even just using a bead for a front sight.
The 12 ga. has already bang-flopped a deer this year as it did last year. I know what it can do. I am now entertaining using the 20 ga. for the remainder of the season and possibly going forward. I'm confident in the 20 gauge's accuracy. I'm less comfortable with the 20 ga. knock-down, stay-down power.
For reloading 20 gauge slugs google Emma Young. She offers loading components and loading data for 12 and 20 gauge slugs using Hornady .452 250 gr and 300 gr pistol bullets. I load with Hornady 20 ga SST range pick up cases, Win 209 primer, 30.0 of Bluedot, 4 fiber wads and a CSS sabot ( Emma Young sabot) and a Hornady 250 gr FTX bullet.
I bought a Mossberg 500, 20 ga, combo package with a rifled barrel and smooth bore. I have tried the Hornady SST's and Remington sabot's. The Hornady's reach out longer but I am shooting deer at no more than 70 yards.
